It's homecoming week. This means dress-up days, work nights, spirit wars, floats, gym and hall decorations, a parade, a rally, a band light show, a football game, lots of homecoming asks (see mine at the end of this email), a dance, and more. But it doesn't mean that all of the other cool things on campus stop. In fact, check out what's happening in Culinary.
Mr. Miles-Gibson's Culinary 1 students just wrapped up their fruit unit, giving them a chance to show off their knife skills and experiment with creative ways to use fruit.
The group pictured, Ryder, Ava, and Adalae, decided to take their creativity a little further and model their "fruit cookie" after one of their group members.
Ryder, I can definitely see the resemblance!
It's great to see students learning practical skills they'll use long after high school while having a little fun along the way.
Worknights - Fueled by Parents
Hundreds of students and dozens of staff members stayed late every night this week for one of Del Oro's great Homecoming traditions: Work Nights.
Hammers, saws, and drills are going nonstop in the float areas. Markers, paintbrushes, and seemingly endless rolls of tape are keeping the posters moving. And somewhere in the middle of all that controlled chaos, students are learning valuable lessons about collaboration, problem-solving, leadership, and what to do when your ambitious Homecoming idea doesn't work the first time.
But there's another important ingredient keeping Work Nights going.
Everywhere you turn, there's a Del Oro parent handing out snacks, drinks, pizza, tacos, desserts, or sometimes full-on meals to a bunch of hungry teenagers.
So, a special thank you to our Del Oro parents for keeping this whole operation running with encouragement, generosity, and hundreds of thousands of calories!
Something Special in the Pool
JV teams don't always get a ton of attention, but there's something pretty special happening in the pool this year with our JV Girls Water Polo team.
The girls are currently 17-3, with an incredible 266 goals and 248 steals already this season. Reagan Tichey has scored 78 goals while shooting 60%, and goalie Presley Gatz has saved 66% of the shots she's faced, allowing just 39 goals while recording 76 saves.
Those are some pretty remarkable numbers at any level. More importantly, this is a talented group of young players having a great season together.
The future of Del Oro Girls Water Polo is looking pretty bright!
Support Softball, Del Oro Style!
This one looks like it will be a lot of fun! Del Oro Softball and the Golden Eagle Softball Association are hosting a Country Line Dancing Lesson Fundraiser, and no experience is necessary.
If you've been to one of our softball games, you may have seen the team incorporate a little country music and dancing into their warm-ups. Now they're giving the rest of us a chance to learn some moves too!
Grab some friends, bring your family, or make it a date night. I'll be there with my wife!
Come learn a few dances, have some fun, and support Del Oro Softball. I have a feeling the softball players will be much better at this than I am.
College Night Service
We hosted the Placer County College Fair on Monday evening, with representatives from colleges across California and around the country, and even one from England, coming to Del Oro to meet with students and families and talk about options for life after high school.
One of my favorite parts of the evening, though, was seeing some of our own students helping make it all happen.
Our boys' water polo team had already put in a pretty full day with school, practice, and a Homecoming work afternoon. They still volunteered their evening to help with the College Fair. Dressed in their Hawaiian game-day shirts, they directed visitors around campus, answered questions, and helped keep everything running smoothly.
It would have been pretty easy to call it a day after everything else they had going on. Instead, they stuck around and served.
Thanks, guys!
Will Ms. Zerwas Say Yes?
I'll keep trying even is she doesn't
