This weekend, I had the chance to participate in a 5K walk organized by the family of a Del Oro student whose daughter battled cancer. The event raises funds and awareness for childhood cancer, but what struck me most was simply seeing how many people from our Del Oro community showed up.
Nearly 100 walkers and runners participated, including Del Oro students, parents, staff members, graduates, and friends. People walked together, laughed, caught up with one another, shared stories, and supported a family that has been through something incredibly difficult. Together, the event raised almost $3,000.
Those funds were donated to Kinsley's Unicorn Squad, an organization created in honor of a child who spent nearly five years battling a rare and aggressive form of pediatric brain cancer. The organization continues Kinsley's legacy by supporting children and families undergoing treatment.
Schools are obviously places where students come to learn, compete, perform, and prepare for whatever comes next. But over time, they also become communities. You see that most clearly when people choose to show up for one another, especially when they don't have to.
I was proud to walk alongside so many Golden Eagles this weekend and to see our community help support a cause that means so much to one of our own.
